During the game with sand the child is able to create symbols. The mind makes symbols spontaneously, and this ability becomes more active when child feels at a loss and can’t cope with an internal or external situation.
Autist accumulates emotional experiences and keeps them in himself. Contact with sand helps to relive distress and anxiety. For the child it is self-expression and self enquiry capability, body and symbols language talk, development of symbolical thinking and inner world enrichment. Tactile contact and fine motor skills development give an additional positive effect for the child with autism.
